Born from the roots of the Earth, Golden Howl brings songs that capture the essence of life. Golden Howl is an indie folk rock band based out of San Diego. With ear-catching layered harmonies, beautifully mysterious on-stage synergy, and carefully crafted songs, they will draw you in and captivate. Formed in 2016 by founding members Marlo Smith (lead vox, drums, cello), Shannon O'Shea (keyboards, accordion, vocals) and Christopher Balcom (acoustic guitar, lead vox), quickly adding Rachel Riba on percussion, and Dimitry Zingerman on electric guitar, and eventually bringing in Jules Stewart on drums and Joshua Mooers on bass, Golden Howl had all the pieces to plug into the outlet of creativity. With a non-traditional setup and unique instrumentation, you will be left in excitement and curiosity for the next song.
After releasing their first EP 'Mighty Mighty' at San Diego's iconic Music Box in August of 2018, they quickly followed it up with EP 'Blue S p a c e' in January 2019 also at Music Box to a full house. During a brief pause while band members Shannon O'Shea & Christopher Balcom celebrated the birth of their first child, founding members Shannon, Christopher and Marlo continued to churn out and craft new songs. Golden Howl's next planned release is end of 2019, with their first full length album coming out in 2020.
Golden Howl offers music and performance to the world that are connecting, exciting and emotionally moving. They have played quintessential venues in San Diego including Casbah, House of Blues, Soda Bar, Hard Rock, in addition to many others, as well as listening rooms such as Lestat's, Java Joes, and Sofar Sounds. They have also shared their music at North Park Festival of the Arts and SD Gypsy Fest.
"The right kind of music is the latest EP from the San Diego folk outfit Golden Howl, Blue Space. It’s peaceful and soothing and meditative in all the best possible ways. It’s like tea, but not the kind of tea you drink when you have a cold. No. More like the kind of tea you drink when you need piece of mind. That kind of tea. It’s also like a nice warm blanket or well-worn hoodie. Comforting. All kinds of comforting."
"It’s often difficult to appreciate the depth of another person’s experience, to empathize with the extent of either their joy or sorrow. But Golden Howl’s latest EP Blue Space envelops listeners in a whirlwind of emotion, from awe to heartbreak, rolling out an invitation into the band’s heart. The second project from the band in the three years since they formed, Blue Space is a collection of richly-crafted soundscapes that raises an already high bar set by the band’s first EP, Mighty Mighty."
"That sense of calm and peacefulness that encapsulates and embodies oh so beautiful San Diego weaves it’s way in and out of Mighty Mighty, the debut EP from Golden Howl, a folksy five piece that calls the city by the sea home. Mighty Mighty is short, but it’s three tunes stick with you thanks in large part to the beautiful harmonies and simplicity of the music. If pressed to describe the sound of Golden Howl, I’d tell you confidently that their music sounds ethereal and I’d leave it at that."
